Smart Tachograph 2 – What You Need to Know
The new generation of tachographs includes satellite positioning, remote enforcement capability, and improved security:
- New vehicles: All trucks and buses registered since August 2023 must be fitted with Smart Tachograph 2
- International journeys: By August 2025, all vehicles used for international work must be equipped, including retrofits to older vehicles
- Domestic UK operations: Vehicles used only within the UK can continue with existing units unless newly registered

Tachograph FAQs
How often do tachographs need calibrating?
Digital tachographs: every 2 years. Analogue tachographs: inspection every 2 years, full recalibration every 6 years. Calibration is also required after vehicle registration changes, alterations to tyre size, or accident repairs.
Are you an approved centre?
Yes—we are VOSA/DVSA-approved for analogue and digital tachograph calibration.
Do you offer retrofits for international journeys?
Yes. We install and retrofit Smart Tachograph 2 units, mandatory for vehicles undertaking international journeys. From August 2025, all trucks and buses used internationally must be fitted with Smart Tachograph 2, including older vehicles.
Do I need Smart Tachograph 2 if I only operate in the UK?
No. Suppose your vehicles are used only within the UK. In that case, you can continue with your existing analogue or digital tachograph unless you register a new vehicle, which will already be required to have Smart Tachograph 2 fitted.
